Since 2008, Sylvaina Gerlich is the first elected member of the Hamburg Integrations Council for the African Continent and she is also chairwoman of IMIC e.V. "to help people" is her slogan and her non-profit organisation.Sylvaina Gerlich knows the people's problems from Africa and from Afro-Germans and she guides, communicates and mediates. She doesn't talk, but takes action, such as being active as the ambassadress for integration and for mutual understanding and works voluntarily. Her voice is heard  in the African Community, also by important politicians, institutions, public authorities and opinion leaders.

Together with IMIC e.V. she encourages Africans and other migrants and mediates and supports Africans and Afro-Germans. She helps with all social questions and problems and helps people with their daily and existential needs. She accompanies them to the authorities, she mediates with respect to family questions, education and health, sports and other activity leisures, asylum- and refugee-helps and also with other help-projects. Sylvaina Gerlich is inspired by her work and encouraged by the network of the Integration Council in order to supply the migrants from all African countries with her help and her balance of her works for the community are really outstanding.

Sylvaina Gerlich, who is a native-born Ghanaian, doesn't difference between nationalities - she states: we are all Africans with a lot of cultures and ethnics,

helps all people not matter what nationality and brings them together in social events. Sylvaina Gerlich initiated Africa Day in Hamburg, a cultural event, occuring every year in Hamburg - it is an integration festival with lust for live with its African traditions - which has more than 10.000 participants in 2015.

She also organises the African Culture Award, a beauty contest for Africans. This year's prize winning awards are: Nigeria, who won the first prize, followed by the Massai (Kenia) and the third prize went to Mali. Not only workshops, but also projects and senior-events are initiated by Sylvaina Gerlich.Sylvaina Gerlich and her IMIC-team make public all important issues of the Africans and Afro-Germans, using panel-discussions, own campaigns, for example the health issue about the Sickle Cell desease as well as information events and discussions regarding the return-home project, schooling and healthsystem and also asyl and migrants questions. Sylvaina Gerlich's aim is that youth should know its roots and culture - she points out perspectives in  exhibitions such as  "African role models", organising this event together with the African Youth Education Awards and, helps with coaching, pc-courses and leisure activities.

Sylvaina Gerlich's vision is to build a world, where all migrants are welcome and where no human has to flee from hunger and war. I want to help is her slogan. Her wish for more acceptance and support with respect to volunteers and she would like to expand her organisation IMIC e.V. in Germany together with her social work.

Sylvaina Gerlich – eine Botschafterin für Integration, die Afrikanern und Migranten konkret hilft

Sylvaina Gerlich ist für den Kontinent Afrika seit dem Jahr 2008 erstes gewähltes Mitglied des Hamburger Integrationsbeirates (Hamburg Integration Council)  und Vorstand von IMIC e.V. „Menschen helfen“ lautet das Motto von Sylvaina Gerlich und ihres gemeinnützigen Vereins IMIC e.V. Sylvaina Gerlich kennt die Probleme von Afrikanern und Afro-Deutschen und vermittelt und kommuniziert sie. Sie redet nicht, sondern sie handelt, tritt als Botschafterin für Integration und gegenseitiges Verständnis aktiv und ehrenamtlich ein und hat eine Stimme, in der afrikanischen Community, bei wichtigen Politikern, Institutionen und Behörden und Meinungsbildnern.

Mit IMIC e.V. setzt sie sich jeden Tag für afrikanische und andere Migranten/innen ein, berät und begleitet Afrikaner/innen und Afrodeutsche in allen sozialen Fragen und Problemen und hilft Menschen in alltäglicher und existentieller Not, bei Behördengängen, in Fragen zu Familie, Erziehung, Ausbildung und Gesundheit, Sport-/Freizeitaktivitäten, Asyl- und Flüchtlingshilfe sowie mit Hilfsprojekten. Sylvaina Gerlich bringt dabei das Netzwerk des Integrationsbeirates ein, um konkrete Hilfe für Migranten aus allen Ländern Afrikas zu leisten – dabei hat sie eine herausragende Bilanz der eigenen Arbeit für die Community aufzuweisen:

• 7.000 soziale Beratungen und Begleitungen durch Sylvaina Gerlich und ihren Verein IMIC e.V.
• 3.000 Vermittlungen und Begleitungen zu Erstaufnahmestellen, in Integrationskurse und sonstigen in- oder externen Maßnahmen (Seminare, Sprachkurse, Nachhilfekurse).
• 850 Vermittlungen in Ausbildungen, Ausbildungsberatungen und Anerkennungen.
• 3700 Weitervermittlungen zu Fachleuten (Recht, Medizin, Existenzgründung etc.).
• 27 Hilfsaktionen für Afrika (Hilfscontainer, Brillenaktion, Rückkehrprojekt).
• 240 kulturelle Veranstaltungen bei IMIC und von IMIC e.V. initiiert.
• 40 namhafte Partner, die mit IMIC e.V. kooperieren und 165 gemeinsame Veranstaltungen.
• 1.050 in- und externe Veranstaltungen, auf denen Sylvaina Gerlich die Interessen der Afrikaner und Afro-Deutschen vertreten hat.

Dabei macht die geborene Ghanaerin Sylvaina Gerlich keine nationalen Unterschiede. “Wir sind alle Afrikaner mit viel Kulturen und Ethnien”, sagt sie, hilft unabhängig von ihrer Nationalität allen Afrikanern und Migranten und bringt sie bei kulturellen Events und anderen Gelegenheiten zusammen. So ist sie Initiatorin, Veranstalterin und Organisatorin z.B. des jährlichen Africa Day, einem integrativen Fest der afrikanischen Lebensfreude, Kulturen und Traditionen, 2015 mit rund 10.000 Teilnehmern, sowie vom African Culture Award mit den diesjährigen Preisträgern Nigeria, Massai (Kenia) und Mali. Daneben organisiert sie Projekte, Workshops und Senioren-Begegnungen.

Sylvaina Gerlich und ihr IMIC-Team machen die brennenden Themen der Afrikaner und Afro-Deutschen öffentlich, bei Podiumsdiskussionen, in eigenen Kampagnen z.B. zum Gesundheitsthema Sickle Cell sowie in Informationsveranstaltungen und Gesprächen zum Rückkehrprojekt, zum Schul- und Gesundheitssystem und zu Asyl- und Flüchtlingsfragen. Dabei ist ihr es ein wichtiges Anliegen, dass die Jugend ihre Wurzeln und ihre Kultur kennen soll. Sylvaina Gerlich zeigt der Jugend Perspektiven z.B.  mit der Ausstellung “Vorbilder“, als Mitorganisatorin des African Youth Education Awards und über Nachhilfe-Angebote, PC-Kurse sowie Sport- und Freizeitaktivitäten.

Die Vision von Sylvaina Gerlich lautet „Eine Welt zu schaffen, in der Migranten überall willkommen sind und in der Menschen nicht mehr flüchten müssen. Dabei will ich helfen.“ Sie wünscht sich mehr Anerkennung und Unterstützung des ehrenamtlichen Engagements und will neben ihrer vor allem sozialen Arbeit in Deutschland das Engagement in Afrika ihres Vereins IMIC e.V. weiter ausbauen.
